first grade.

a type of homework that the boys have is to read a story in their work booklet in front of a parent. the parent is then supposed to sign on the booklet, to confirm that the child read the story reasonably well.

after signing a few stories for both boys over the past weeks, ilan asks me to sign on two stories today.

shouldn't you read them to me first? - i ask.- shouldn't i hear you read them first?

ilan is very smart and he loves to learn. the teacher has advanced him and a few other children. she also gave them a special booklet to allow them to do some extra work, ahead of the class. he loves to read ahead and tries to read anything that falls into his hands, with reasonable success.

so now ilan gives me a self-confident smile - you don't need to hear me! you know that i read well!

indeed, i do know that. i sign.
