about a half year ago i told our boys the famous story of mishpat shlomo - of the two mothers who came to shlomo hamelech fighting over a baby, and that shlomo said - let's cut him in half.
then, i told them, one mother said - ok. whereas the other said - no, no! give the baby to the other woman!
and that shlomo hamelech then said that now he knows who the real mother is.
for some reason i told this story to our boys separately, on two separate occasions. and both of them, shocked, immediately said - of course the real mother is the one who said 'don't cut him', don't kill him!
although i have known this story all my life, i was never as moved by it as when i saw the shock on the boys' faces when i told them that shlomo ordered to cut the baby in half. - but he will die! - they reacted.
and i was touched and pleased at their understanding that the real mother would never agree to kill her child. i was touched and pleased at their confidence in the world, at their trust in the world and in their mother.
and then yesterday a woman in raanana murdered her 2 daughters, ages 6 and 4. the six year old was in the first grade in our boys' school (they are in first grade, but not in the same class as the girl).
although this is their first year in this school, they may have known the girl. they may have seen her in the hall. they may have played with her during class breaks. they may have played ball with her during recess.
the world can no longer be trusted. there is death. there is murder - even of a child by its mother...
the end of innocence!
