Competition between the boys is eternal. But sometimes they confuse me! What is victory? Is being first a victory or not? Is being ‘first’ a privilege or a punishment?
Competition all the time! Competition over everything! – Why does he get food first? Why does he kick the ball first? Why should I get dressed first? Why should I be the first to brush my teeth?
It is shower time and the daily argument begins. – Who will come to the shower first? – He will. – No, he will. Yesterday I was the first! – No, I was! And it’s not fair! Everyday I go first! – And so it goes on and on and on...
Finally, exasperated, I tell Nathan to come to the shower first. After some more arguments he obeys... and cries all through the shower. - It’s not fair! And my foot hurts. And my hand. And it hurts here...
An hour later I start to take my medications. The boys like to put the pills in my mouth. Again, competition. Luckily I take four pills, an even number, easily divisible by two. I give each boy two pills, for them to put in my mouth. Easy, right? No! They argue. - Not fair! He got the bigger pills!
Then comes the time to put the pills in my mouth. And suddenly the rules change. – You go first. – No, you first! – Until yesterday they fought to be ‘first’! And suddenly being ‘first’ is bad...
And then Nathan turns to me with a devastating argument – not fair, aba! I already did something ‘first’ today, something that I didn’t want to do! I took the shower ‘first’! So it is not fair that I should also have to be the first to put the pills in your mouth!
You understand, of course, that nobody is asking them to put the pills in my mouth! This is a game they invented, not an obligation! This is something they want! But the minute one of them hints that he ‘wants’ or ‘does not want’ something, it becomes something to argue about, to fight about. It becomes a matter of life and death!!!
I usually react with exasperation. But his argument so baffles me that my reaction is a laughing fit! And Rita and the boys, who have no idea why I am laughing, laugh also because they think my laughter is funny...
